I Am A Wannabe Dictator

BMI is bullshit and now that's official. Also, synthetic human embryos can exist now, a horrifying yet not uncommon tragedy off the coast of Greece, Fox News copies my vibes and a look back at a historic uprising.

I Am A Wannabe Dictator

We've known BMI was bullshit, but now its official

A bunch of doctor types got together in a big ol' medical pow-wow and decided that BMI fucking sucks. The American Medical Society voted overwhelmingly to adopt a policy that essentially boils down to "BMI is a shit statistic for individual assessment, but we're gonna keep using it for population stats while we figure out a better way"

It is not really news that BMI is garbo, but it is indeed news that real policy movement is happening, so that's cool.

Speaking of medical science,

Professor Magdalena Zernicka-Goetz from the University of Cambridge in California has created the first synthetic human embryo, raising just a WHOLE LOTTA QUESTIONS about ethics and whatnot.

The embryo was created without sperm or eggs, using cultured cells from another embryo and just a dash of stem cell stuff that goes way over my head.

To be abundantly clear, there is no current proposal to grow synthetic embryos into full humans, buuuuuuuut that's a thing we're gonna need to get some people (who are far smarter than I am) working on like, asap.

Massively crowded migrant boat capsized, leaving dozens dead and missing

A boat carrying hundreds of migrants bound for Greece from Libya capsized off the coast of Greece early Wednesday morning. At least 79 people have died, and hundreds more are unaccounted for.

This is, unfortunately, not an uncommon occurrence, though one of the largest in a while. The migrant route from Libya to Greece is considered one of the deadliest in the world, as migrants pack onto boats that are often not even fit to be sailed with a normal crew. The desperation and desire for safety and prosperity drives people to make impossible decisions, gambling with their lives as they make the trek.

Fox News runs a wild chyron, also its called a "chyron"

Chyron (n.) an electronically generated caption superimposed on a television or movie screen.

Its the name for headlines being displayed on news footage.

ANYWAY, after Trump was arrested for the crimes he bragged about doing on tape, Fox News ran a chyron over split-screen footage of Trump and Biden both given speeches, reading: "WANNABE DICTATOR SPEAKS AT THE WHITE HOUSE AFTER HAVING HIS POLITICAL RIVAL ARRESTED"

Fox has since stated that it has "addressed" the situation, but hasn't said anything besides that.

On the one hand, Fox News sucks. On the other, that is essentially the same as a headline I'd use right here on Stuff Keeps Happening, so what the fuck do I know.

On this day…

On this day in 1976, the Soweto uprising began in South Africa. Somewhere between 10,000 and 20,000 black students began peacefully protesting against the apartheid decree that they must start taking lessons in Afrikaans, a language chosen by ruling powers to further the divide between white and black South Africans.

The peaceful protest turned radically violent when cops began murdering the children to enforce the unjust will of their state. 176 students—again, children—were killed in the ensuing two-day massacre. The violence triggered international outcry, as well as further domestic protests. Hundreds died over the course of the year from associated events, sending the country into political and economic turmoil.

At the time, the law was that you were not allowed to document what police had done. I recommend watching this documentary to learn more.
